Bishop Tom
This past weekend, I took a road trip with some friends to Roanoke to see N.T. Wright speak. He gave several talks during the end of last week and the weekend. We only saw him speak on Sunday morning. One point that he made that stuck with me was this (I'm paraphrasing because I was not taking notes.):
We, as humans, are to be mirrors and reflect God's love to the world, it is a part of image bearing, but, therein lies the issue. We are not only a part of the solution, but also a part of the problem.

ooooooooooooo!!! so jealous!! i'm sure it was amazing...feel free to unpack anymore of it for those of us less fortunate...
just a quick thought Mr. Shannon!!
Realising that we are part of the problem and not being paralyzed by that reflects the very power and love of God. We take risks to love one another and those whom God has called us to love when we KNOW we will mess up and we know we still ARE messes in some ways... and yet I think in such a cynical world.. the willingness to love radically and the willingness to look foolish and allow ouselves to fail will make people wonder why in the heck we would do so.(Especially since we could stay in a much safer realm and build ourselves up in a way that makes us look 'good'.)We are radical failures. Jesus himself was seen that way!! (who ever heard of a 'crucified' Messiah? what's up with that?!) Does that make any sense?
I am so excited to be a part of God's church with all of you. since there are only buildings, we can claim Visio Dei as an extension of our community of faith and we are enriched and challeged because of it. (We are going to the recycling bin today- it is far away.!!!!) That too is seen by the larger world.
we loved having you all with us this week end.
sincerely, traci's mom
Hey Shannon,
I'm really glad you guys got a chance to hear NT Wright. He has been one of the biggest influences in my life as he helps put me in the story of God in a way that challenges me not to make Jesus in my own image. I started reading his major volumes in college and fell in love with them. However, I think his book, the Challenge of Jesus, is a book every Christian in our age should read. He helps us to think deeper and at the same time summons us to follow this living Christ in our time and place today.
