"We are all environmentalists."

I just finished watching the season premier for a new show on the Sundance Channel. The show is Big Ideas for a Small Planet. The first episode is called Fuel, and discusses three alternative fuels, vegetable oil, bio-diesel, and ethanol.

I found it very interesting. I would love to hear what other people have to say about it. Currently, you can download the season premier for free from the iTunes store.

If you have time, check it out and come back and post your thoughts.

Hey Shannon,

I've been checking in every once in a while since I saw your comment on my ramblings...

I'm happy say that I'm really challenged by the things you write and point out.
It seems like a lot of us get so busy with our lives that by the time we get around to putting something up on the ol' Blogger page, it's silly and/or pointless (at least that's often the case for me).

As for this post, I just want to echo for all who read this to consider that those of us who call ourselves followers of Jesus should be the most environmentally conscious of all.

-My 2 cents

i think we should wake up and realize that god gave us dominion over nature and not worry about all this liberal mumbo jumbo, save the planet stuff....

okay, maybe that was unnecessarily sacrcastic

shannon, thanks for leading the activist charge on all different levels. you are really raising awareness about a wide variety of important issues and helping to empower us to live differently

thanks, bro, i haven't had a chance to look at the video yet, but I know this is an area I can grow in as I have been very low on the tree hugger scale to this point in my life

danielle and I just switched diapers to ones that disolve in the toilet because we realized how awful regular diapers are for the envt. also, simple thing, we try to bring a regular grocery bag to the store cuz it takes 1000 years for plastic ones to disintegrate; and i just started bringing my coffee cup around for coffee and water; i think the car issue and water issues are important ones to think about too, haven't gotten that far along yet

you should let gore know about the diaper thing, i heard he goes through a lot of diapers a day himself

don't tell me that now YOU have started to hate developers as well! just teasing

on a more serious note, i worked with an alumnus here at wake to develop a business plan for a sustainable, green development on the chesapeake bay. really interesting work.

in our body of research the thing we found is that in many cases people don't understand the payback of environmentalism. now what does that really mean? well, unfortunately, the majority of folks don't care too terribly much about the long term effects of their actions. they do, however, care for how it effects their wallet. did you know that by simply spending an additional 10% on your house purchase that you can save 35% year over year on your utilities. taken in perpetuity that's a lot of money!

therein lies the problem with the majority of environmentalists. it's a marketing problem. you (not you but corporate you) have to learn how to speak to the needs of people, not to our needs or the reasons it's ultimately a good thing. if we can clearly articulate the case for choosing environmentally friendly solutions and how it affects folks in the hear and now or near term future i think we'd be surprised at the number of folks who'd begin to lean in that direction

oh, an too, the start of corey's post - in my first interview with my boss (i work as a developer) he asked me this:

patrick in genesis god gives adam and eve dominion over the earth, what do you think that means in light of our career as developers.
