Mobile Computing

I have the desire to own a macbook. Sometimes the desire is stronger than others. Like right now, for instance, the desire is strong. I want to be able to sit on my couch, watch the replay of the Tennessee-Cal game, and post on my blog all at the same time. There are a couple problems with fulfilling my desire, though I have rationalizations for ignoring at least one of the problems.

One, macbooks cost money. I know, I could get a basic macbook for about $1,000. My job offers an employee purchase program where I could get an interest free loan for one year to buy the machine. So, I could get a basic macbook for about $85 per month.

Two, I am trying to not "buy" into the life of excess. In a lot of ways I already have, but I am trying to run my finanical decisions through some filters that asks "Do I really need this?", "What else could I do with this money?", "Whose kingdom is this expanding? God's? Shannon's?"

Maybe when Kim starts working from home, I will be able to convince myself that we "need" a second computer. The iMac can become her "work" computer, and I can get a laptop. Until then, if anyone is giving away free macbooks, I'll take one.

Hey Shannon,

It's funny how much I can relate to you about a lot of the things you write.

I share the same feelings about an iPhone that you feel about a macbook. I really believe that I could get my money out of it, but it feels like a step into excess.

For what it's worth, I just want to offer you a warning about macbooks.

I have one, and when it's working well, I love it. I especially love that I can get 5-6 hours out of the battery. But the key phrase there is, 'when it's working'.

In 14 months I have had to replace the heatsink, the battery, and the disk drive. In fact, if you do a quick google search, there are several websites dedicated to people who have had nothing but problems with their macbook.

So... I guess what I'm saying is, buy the warranty :0)

I am late on this post, but man do I ever feel you.

I bought the macbook for school, art school, lots of arty programs that need a large screen and lots of memory and processor speed, three things the computer doesn't really offer.

For every minute I spend working on something for school, another two minutes are spent contemplating an upgrade to an iMac. Life would be so much better with it, right? Huge screen, faster, better, more!

What the heck else could I do with $1800, well lets think about that one for a minute...
There are millions of better ways to spend that much money, most of them not on myself.
And that's pretty much where it ends every time.

I don't need it, but I really want it.
I don't really even want it but I am convinced it would help me in school and blah blah blah... did you notice apple has been showcasing it on there site? Yeah, that really helps. We get a sas discount, I get a school discount, I happen to have a refund coming back from my pell grants (I jsut switched schools, saving 7k a year in tuition now yeahhhh!) anyway, the refund from financial aid is for THE EXACT AMOUNT IT WOULD COST TO BUY A NEW IMAC. I kid you not. Could I be anymore tempted? Seriously. This is tough.

I am not going to get it.
I don't need two computers. (I could sell my macbook)
I don't need a better computer. (Yes I do)
I am not going to get it.... right?
haha.

You buy the iMac, which I highly recommend, and you give me the macbook.

Everyone wins.

Hahaha.
Do you have an iMac?
Lets just trade!
Either way, I like your thinking!
